Chemistry is the silent engine behind much of our local innovation, from the paints on our whare to the medicines in our clinics. The New Zealand Institute of Chemistry (NZIC) has officially opened its 2026 prize round, offering a platform to celebrate the people driving these advancements.

These awards are not just for those in high-tech labs. They recognise the broad impact of chemical science on our economy, our environment, and our rangatahi. Whether you are an established researcher, teacher or a student finding your feet, there is a category that acknowledges your contribution to Aotearoa.

Key Prize Information

  • Maurice Wilkins Centre Prize: The premier award for NZIC members demonstrating excellence and impact in chemical science.

  • Industrial and Applied Chemistry: Focuses on technological improvements and new products that benefit the community. Membership is not required.

  • Early Career Prize: Supports independent researchers in academia or industry who are in the early stages of their journey.

  • Chemical Education Award: Honours a kaiako or individual making significant contributions to chemistry education, particularly at the secondary level.

  • Student Members Award: Specifically for student members of the NZIC who have published outstanding research papers.

How to Nominate for the NZIC Chemistry Prizes

The nomination process is straightforward and includes the option for self-nomination. This ensures that even those working quietly in industry or regional schools have the chance to be seen. Recognising these achievements helps bridge the gap between complex research and the practical decisions that affect New Zealanders every day.
