Understanding our coastal environment means learning from those who have navigated and sustained it for thousands of years. The New Zealand Maritime Museum is hosting a landmark showcase that brings together the Indigenous knowledge systems of 24 Moana Oceania island nations.
Developed by Lagi-Maama Academy and Consultancy alongside community knowledge holders, this project connects Tangata Whenua and diaspora communities across Aotearoa. Kaiako will find an incredible wealth of traditional ecological knowledge on display.
The galleries feature stories of seasonal calendars, ancient pottery tracing early migration routes, and cultural traditions that highlight the deep relationships between people, lands, seas, and skies. This is a brilliant opportunity for rangatahi to see how ancestral wisdom continues to shape cultural identity across the Pacific.
