Physics at Otago Teacher Professional Development Day 2026

2 min read

The Department of Physics at the University of Otago and NZIP are hosting a collaborative gathering in Dunedin to strengthen physics education across Aotearoa.

Connecting regional research directly to classroom learning grounds complex physical concepts in the local environment. When rangatahi see how physics explains energy systems, weather patterns, and local infrastructure, classroom learning becomes a tool for community decision-making. This event gives kaiako direct access to university scientists and peers to build those place-based links.

Tailored Streams for Senior and Junior Science

This year features two dedicated streams to support different teaching backgrounds. The main programme covers senior physics topics, practical activities, and assessment approaches.

A parallel stream focuses on general science teachers who do not specialise in physics. Designed around the physics requirements of the new curriculum at Years 9 and 10, this stream offers flexible half-day or short-module options based on attendee feedback.

Community-Led Workshops and Calls for Presenters

Organised by Sue Napier (NZIP), the Otago Physics Department, and volunteer physics teachers, the event is built around community sharing. Kaiako are invited to lead or contribute short sessions on classroom experiments, teaching strategies, or assessment design. Submissions close two weeks prior to the event. on Friday 13th November.
