Tauranga City Council is bringing back its popular green initiative to help residents boost biodiversity right in their own backyards. Local households can register to receive one free tree to plant on their property, with 3,000 native and fruit trees up for grabs

Tauranga Free Tree Day 2026 is a direct way for the community to take part in place-based environmental action. Currently, our city has only 22% tree canopy cover. The council aims to increase this to 30% to improve local air quality, create vital urban shade, and provide critical shelter for native birdlife.
