Bay Science understands that the Horticultural and Agricultural Teachers Association (HATA) has received confirmation from the Secretary of Education that Agricultural and Horticultural Science (AgHort) will remain a standalone, Ministry-led academic subject and pathway for Years 12 and 13 in the refreshed NZ Curriculum.

In a communication from the Ministry to HATA, which has been shared with all HATA members, the Ministry concluded that the subject could not be adequately covered through other science areas or through the industry-led Primary Industries subject. Keeping it standalone would ensure that students continue to access a science-based learning pathway that supports progression from Year 11 and sits alongside other specialist sciences.

While Agribusiness will remain integrated within Business Studies, the Ministry will work closely with subject associations to ensure it is visible and valued within the curriculum.

Draft subject descriptions for Ministry-led subjects are expected in mid-October, with wider consultation scheduled for Term 1, 2026.

In communications to members of HATA, secretary Kerry Allen expressed appreciation for the perseverance and advocacy of members and public supporters, noting that the collective voice of teachers and the wider community helped shape this decision.
