The draft Te Marautanga o Aotearoa framework and Years 0–10 wāhanga ako have now been released for consultation, marking a significant milestone in the refresh of Aotearoa New Zealand’s national curriculum.

Following the release of updated Te Reo Rangatira and Pāngarau in October 2025 (now in use from Term 1, 2026), the newly released drafts include the Te Marautanga o Aotearoa framework and wāhanga ako for:
Pūtaiao
Te Waiora
Toi Ihiihi
Hangarau
Ngā Reo
Te Reo Pākehā
Te Ao Māori is expected to follow shortly. A set of accompanying infosheets and explainer videos has also been released to support engagement with the “knowledge-rich” intent of the framework.
Consultation now open
The release of the Pūtaiao Draft Te Marautanga o Aotearoa provides kaiako with an early opportunity to engage critically with how Pūtaiao is structured across Years 0–10. The Ministry of Education is actively seeking feedback from kaiako, tumuaki, whānau, and the wider sector on the draft framework and wāhanga ako. Consultation is open until Friday 24 April 2026, with opportunities also available for in-class trialling of selected learning areas.
Looking ahead: Years 11–13
Draft Years 11–13 subjects will be released in Term 1, 2026 for feedback, with implementation beginning from 2028. Schools are encouraged to begin using the full Year 9 curriculum in 2026, as this cohort will be the first to transition into the new senior subjects.
