Agribusiness in Schools and Sow the Seed are deeply concerned by the Ministry of Education’s recent announcement that Agricultural and Horticultural Science and Agribusiness will no longer be offered as standalone subjects in the senior secondary school curriculum.

While we acknowledge the Ministry’s intent to develop a new Primary Industries subject with input from the Industry Skills Board, we firmly believe that the removal of these existing subjects, both of which are recognised as being of national importance, risks undermining the talent pipeline into New Zealand’s most critical industry sector.

These subjects have played a crucial role in engaging students with the primary industries and preparing them for future leadership roles in a sector that underpins our economy and supports our national sustainability goals.

Agribusiness in Schools and Sow the Seed are actively consulting with stakeholders and strongly advocating for the retention of both Agricultural and Horticultural Science and Agribusiness within the secondary school curriculum.
