Update: The Critical Minerals website now has a section 'Critical Minerals for Kiwi Kids'. 27/01/2026 |
Earth Sciences New Zealand has launched a new website dedicated to Critical Minerals in New Zealand — a national resource that brings together information about the minerals essential to our modern technology and economy.
The site features detailed profiles of individual minerals, explanations of mineral systems, and interactive web maps that support research, exploration, and education. It’s an especially valuable tool for teachers looking to connect Earth science concepts with real-world applications — from renewable energy and electric vehicles to everyday technologies that rely on these minerals.
Teachers can use the resource to help students explore questions such as where these minerals are found, how they form, and why sustainable sourcing matters for New Zealand’s future industries.
Ngā mihi to Earth Sciences NZ and GNS Science | Te Pū Ao for creating this resource. Our kaiako readers will be able to engage rangatahi with Earth science and matter cycling through backyard examples of how minerals shape science and sustainability in Aotearoa.
