Fully Funded STEAM for Flood Resilience Workshop for Schools | STEAM-ED Tauranga

STEAM-ED is excited to offer “Te Hīkoi o te Wai – Flood Resilience through STEAM-based Kaitiakitanga”, a fully funded, hands-on STEAM workshop suitable for students from Years 5 - 8 . The workshop blends practical engineering design, science-based decision-making , and Te Ao Māori perspectives, empowering students to see themselves as guardians and future problem-solvers in their communities.

Thanks to recent funding, we are delighted to offer this programme completely free to schools in our region. We are able to come to your school or host you at our STEAM facility across from Tauranga Boys College — whichever option suits. The only commitment we ask for is that teachers complete a short feedback form at the end of the session to help us develop and improve future programmes.

About the Workshop

In this engaging 1.5 hour workshop, students will experience the engineering design process as they explore the science and technology behind flood resilience through systemic wetland management. They will:

• Build and test watershed models to understand the system they're working with.

• Model different river shapes and floodplains to see how design and development choices affect flooding

• Use a wetland model to explore the impact of design and development decisions on flood resilience

Available Dates 

We have the following dates available for Term 3, 2026:

• Friday, 28 August

• Friday, 4 September
  

And for Term 4, 2026:

• Friday, 16 October

• Friday, 23 October
  

These 1.5 hour workshops are designed for a maximum of 30 students and will be facilitated by two experienced STEAM-ED educators. If you need more than one workshop, let us know as soon as possible. 

Workshops will also be available in Terms 1 and 2 of 2027 if schools wish to express their interest.
