The Great Southern BioBlitz celebrates the spring seasonal surge in biodiversity through an international citizen-science event inviting people to record the living world around them using iNaturalist.

New Zealand kākā perched among native bush, representing biodiversity and citizen-science participation in the Great Southern BioBlitz 2025.

Running from 24–27 October 2025, the Great Southern BioBlitz brings together communities, schools, and nature lovers across Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond. The goal is simple: observe, identify, and share as many species as possible — helping scientists, educators, and conservationists build a richer picture of our ecosystems.

From the forests of the Bay of Plenty to the beaches of South Africa and the deserts of Australia, thousands of participants in the Southern Hemisphere will take part in this global celebration of life.

To join in, visit the official pages for participants or organisers, or explore the umbrella project on iNaturalist. Use #GreatSouthernBioBlitz and #GSB25 on social media to share your discoveries!
