Biology teachers across Aotearoa are in for a treat this November, with a nationwide series of Maurice Wilkins Centre Biology Teacher Professional Development Days hosted by the Maurice Wilkins Centre (MWC) in association with BEANZ (Biology Educators of Aotearoa NZ).
The 2025 programme brings together leading researchers and science communicators to share the latest in molecular discovery, conservation, and synthetic biology—linking directly to the senior secondary biology and science standards.

Where and When
A range of locations and dates are available, but Bay of Plenty kaiako can head along to the Tauranga Yacht Club on Tuesday 4 November. Other options include Taupō (3 Nov), Auckland (5 Nov), Queenstown (10 Nov), and Timaru (11 Nov). All events are held during school hours, with morning tea and lunch provided.
Why Attend?
For secondary teachers, this is more than just a professional development day—it’s a chance to:
Engage with scientists at the forefront of discovery.
Deepen your own subject knowledge in biology.
Gather fresh insights and examples to inspire rangatahi in the classroom.
The talks align closely with the standards many of us are teaching, including:
Level 1 Science: AS91920, AS92020, AS92022
Level 2 Biology: AS91156, AS91159
Level 3 Biology: AS91602, As91604, AS91607
