Level 3 Chemistry can be tough – especially when it comes to concepts like Ka and Kb calculations, equilibrium in solution, and titration calculations. To help students (and kaiako) navigate these tricky waters, Mat Synge, Chemistry and Physics teacher at Aquinas College, has put together an online hub of interactive tools.

Practice makes permanent, and Aqueous Chemistry in NCEA Level 3 is full of opportunities to practice calculations.

Currently, the site is in its early stages and focuses on a few calculations for NCEA Level 3 Aqueous Chemistry, but the website will eventually expand to include other types of calculations and achievement standards too.

Mat Synge's interactives are very easy to use; just choose the type of calculation you want to practice and generate a random practice question.

Teachers across the motu may find it a handy resource to recommend to their students as part of Term 3-4 holiday revision in preparation of the external examinations in November.

Mat Synge is a Chemistry and Physics teacher at Aquinas College in Tauranga and is also the Bay of Plenty representative for the New Zealand Institute of Physics (Education Section). His website, 13Chem Helpful Things, is an experiment in creating interactive tools that give students opportunities to practise and reinforce specific skills and concepts. At present it offers a small collection of practice questions on aqueous chemistry.

Ngā mihi

Ngā mihi nui ki a Mat Synge for sharing this kaupapa and for his continued mahi supporting both ākonga and kaiako in the Bay of Plenty and beyond.
