Inspiring the Next Generation: Regional NIWA Science and Technology Fairs Are Back for 2026

Every year, thousands of students across Aotearoa get the opportunity to do exactly that through regional science competitions. These events provide a platform for young minds to showcase original investigations, innovative inventions, and rigorous data analysis.

The focus goes beyond standard textbook scenarios. Students are encouraged to look at their backyard, their local waterways, and their communities to design projects that address immediate, real world issues.

A group of young New Zealand rangatahi and their kaiako conduct an outdoor water quality experiment, checking pH levels with a colour chart and recording results in field notebooks in a grassy outdoor setting.

When our rangatahi participate in these competitions, they are not just winning prizes. They are learning how to bridge the gap between scientific research and community decision-making. By investigating topics like soil health, coastal erosion, or urban waste management, they gain a deeper understanding of how science shapes the future of New Zealand.

Tip: Do your students have an environmental project? Why not double up and enter them for Te Tūkohu Ngāwha Mātauranga Māori and Science Design Fair?
