The Ministry has released a new update on Tāhurangi calling for Expressions of Interest to support Phase 5 science curriculum development for Years | Tau 11–13.

The Ministry has released a new update on Tāhurangi calling for Expressions of Interest to support Phase 5 science curriculum development for Years | Tau 11–13.

This marks the beginning of the senior secondary design phase — the bridge between the knowledge-rich Years 0–10 framework and the new suite of senior science subjects expected from 2028 onwards. This follows the September release of the draft list of senior secondary subjects.

The Ministry’s stated focus is on ensuring a sequential and coherent progression from the “knowledge-rich” Years 0–10 curriculum into senior pathways. Subject advisors will collaborate on design, writing, and refinements as the scope of some subjects evolves through development.

Expressions of Interest are open until 12 December 2025, with further information about role expectations, time commitment, and remuneration provided via the SurveyMonkey link on Tāhurangi.

The Ministry aims to publish draft Years 11–13 subject curricula in Term 1, 2026 for wider sector feedback. Implementation is scheduled to roll out progressively from 2028–2030.

Who’s leading Phase 5?

The Ministry has announced that Dr Catherine Law, Principal of Avonside Girls’ High School, has been seconded into the role of Curriculum Programme Lead for Phase | Tūārere 5. With a background in curriculum design, Dr Law will oversee development, review processes, and the sequencing of senior secondary subjects.
