The Aotearoa Astrotourism Academy is running a 2½-day weekend astronomy course in Naseby, Central Otago, from 27 to 29 March 2026. This hands-on immersion is designed for stargazing enthusiasts, teachers, aspiring amateur astronomers and astrophotographers who want to build real confidence under the Southern Hemisphere night sky.

No prior experience is required.

Across the weekend, participants learn how to identify constellations, planets and other celestial bodies using the unaided eye, binoculars and small telescopes. The course also covers how to set up and use a telescope at home, how to share night-sky knowledge with others, and how to photograph celestial objects. Sessions with Kiwi astrophotographer John Drummond support participants to tackle the unique challenges of night sky photography.

The programme includes an introduction to Matariki and Māori astronomy, providing cultural and scientific context that is especially relevant for educators and community leaders in Aotearoa.

The course is led by Professor John Hearnshaw, who played a key role in establishing the Dark Sky Reserve in Tekapo. Learning takes place through daytime lectures and workshops, followed by practical observing sessions over two evenings, weather permitting.

This may be of particular interest to:

  • Science teachers wanting to deepen their astronomy knowledge and bring fresh enthusiasm back to their classrooms

  • Amateur astronomers considering astroguiding or entering the growing astrotourism industry

  • Photographers keen to develop their night-sky skills

  • Anyone curious about New Zealand’s dark sky movement and space science

Early-bird enrolments are available until 6 March 2026. Numbers are limited.

Full details and registration can be found via the Aotearoa Astrotourism Academy website.
