Sustainable Backyards is back for its 21st year, bringing a full calendar of events across the Bay of Plenty this March.
The programme is all about practical, everyday sustainability. Through workshops, tours, clean-ups and community events, Sustainable Backyards connects people with local knowledge, ideas and inspiration for healthier homes, thriving gardens and more sustainable living.
This year’s line-up includes:
Beach cleans and bush walks
Garden tours
A benefit concert and film screening
Guided bus tours
Clothing swaps and eco-friendly sales
Events like clothing swaps, composting workshops and waste reduction activities are not just lifestyle choices. They are real-world examples of matter cycling in action. Reusing, recycling and repairing keep materials moving through systems rather than heading straight to landfill. For teachers, these are tangible contexts for exploring nutrient cycles, resource use, systems thinking and kaitiakitanga with students.
Whether you are just starting out or already deep into composting, rainwater harvesting or low-waste living, there is something in the mix.
Head to the Sustainable Backyards website to explore the full calendar and book events via Humanitix. A competition to win a nights stay at Watercliff Eco-Cabins in Ōmanawa is also available!
