The Get Ready Civil Defence Schools Challenge has returned for 2026, and the prizes are just as impressive as the life-saving skills on offer. This year, schools have the chance to win one of 15 iPads simply by engaging their students in emergency preparedness.

The sign features a map of evacuation zones, safety instructions, and the Civil Defence logo. In the background across the water is the prominent natural landmark of Mauao (Mount Maunganui) under a clear blue sky.

Bay of Plenty Civil Defence and NEMA have designed this programme to be as fun as it is functional. It moves beyond the textbook and into practical, hands-on activities that rangatahi can share with their whānau.

By signing up, kaiako can lead their students through a series of tasks that demystify local hazards and clarify exactly what to do when the unexpected happens.

Event Information and Prizes:

  • 15 iPads to be won for participating schools.

  • Eight core activities covering hazards, emergencies, and household safety.

  • Students learn to create household escape plans and emergency kits.

  • Open to Year 1 to 8 students across Aotearoa.

  • Collaborative initiative featuring NZ Police, Fire and Emergency NZ, and Hato Hone St John.

  • Challenges closes 12 June 2026

This initiative ensures that the science of emergency management is grounded in our local communities. When students understand the specific risks of their own region, they become more confident and capable during real-world events.
