The Aotearoa Astrotourism Academy is running an intensive weekend course designed to turn everyday stargazing enthusiasts into confident amateur astronomers. This immersion event bridges the gap between professional space science and community-led eco-tourism, helping attendees bring stellar knowledge back to their schools and regional businesses.
The upcoming weekend workshop offers an excellent opportunity to gain practical skills in astronomy and night sky guiding. Participants will learn how to connect communities with the stars, blending modern scientific techniques with traditional observational knowledge.

Day Venue: Kūaotunu Community Hall, 12 Black Jack Road, Coromandel Peninsula.
Night Venue: Stargazers B&B and Astro Tours observatory, 9 School of Mines Lane, Kūaotunu.
Early-Bird Registration: Available until Friday 28 August 2026 for $295.
Standard Registration: $385 from Saturday 29 August 2026 onwards.
What You Will Learn at the Aotearoa Astrotourism Academy
The immersion course is delivered by expert instructors, including Professor John Hearnshaw and astrophotographer John Drummond. The curriculum covers navigating the Southern Hemisphere night sky with telescopes and binoculars, night-time photography, and an essential introduction to Matariki and Māori astronomy.
This training programme is ideal for Earth and Space Science kaiako looking to inspire rangatahi, as well as budding dark sky advocates wishing to establish local astrogauging ventures. No previous astronomy experience is required to attend the sessions.
