On November 12, 2025, Mount Maunganui College hosted 25 science kaiako from the Bay of Plenty for a Term 4 cluster event focused on innovative teaching strategies and the latest NCEA updates. Matt Synge from the New Zealand Institute of Physics (NZIP) led a hands-on session exploring practical physics demonstrations, designed to help teachers tackle common misconceptions in the classroom.

Lian Soh, representing both the New Zealand Association of Science Educators (NZASE) and SCENZ, then outlined key changes to the Nature of Science and Chemistry-Biology standards for NCEA Level 1 in 2025. Drawing on resources prepared by Linda Haycock (NZASE) and official Ministry of Education materials, Lian offered side-by-side comparisons of the new documentation, ensuring teachers left well-equipped for the upcoming NCEA transitions.

All session materials and a Google Slides deck can be found here.

This cluster meeting was generously sponsored by LearnWell, whose contributions of kai, koha, and teaching resources underscored their ongoing support for science educators in the Bay of Plenty. Bay Science wishes to thank LearnWell for their commitment to fostering vibrant professional learning opportunities in the region, as well local Bay of Plenty subject association representatives, Mount Maunganui College staff and students for their assistance running the cluster meeting.
