Café Scientifique Tauranga are wrapping up their 2025 programme with a session led by Bryan Winters, who will take everyone on a “virtual guided walk” from Gondwanaland through to one of our region’s most recognisable beaches.
Bryan is a familiar face in the community — TEDx speaker, TECT Volunteer of the Year (2024), long-time surf instructor, and an author who writes widely about science, history, and the outdoors. His talks tend to connect big ideas with local places, which is why we’re sharing it here for kaiako who are teaching Earth systems, coastal processes, or local science contexts.

Doors open 6:30 pm for a 7:00 pm start

What the session covers
Bryan’s talk traces Aotearoa’s journey from its Gondwanan origins through major climate shifts and coastal changes, before looking closely at how sand, weather, and long- and short-term coastal dynamics shape the beach today. There’s also a mix of local stories, bits of science history, and reflections on risk and resilience along our coastline. Plenty here for teachers wanting to refresh their own background knowledge on climate, coasts, or deep time.
Ngā mihi to the Café Scientifique team — we found this through their newsletter.
