Hosted by Envirohub Bay of Plenty, Tīwaiwaka, and the Western Bay of Plenty District Council, this evening event connects forests, harbours, and our own backyards as living parts of one ecosystem.
Through the lens of Think Like a Forest — a short film exploring the wisdom of nature’s networks — you’ll meet speakers who bring the conversation to life:
Pā Ropata (Rob McGowan) – on the Tīwaiwaka movement and guiding principles for caring for te whenua.
Sam Rowland – filmmaker and environmental advocate, introducing the documentary.
Prof Chris Battershill – marine ecologist, unpacking how our harbours and ocean corridors connect to the health of our land.
Rose Riley – founder of Space For Nature, showing how backyards can become mini-habitats that feed biodiversity.
Louise Saunders – on the Tīwaiwaka “16% Club” and how you can take part in regenerative community action.
This event offers a powerful reminder that environmental change doesn’t start “out there” — it starts here, in our own places. Perfect for kaiako, students, and community groups alike, Ecosystems in Action connects mātauranga Māori, local science, and everyday kaitiakitanga in ways that inspire real-world sustainability.
