A month-long fungi hunt in the Bay of Plenty this April 2026 is set to encourage people to get outdoors and explore local biodiversity.

The initiative is a collaboration between Envirohub Bay of Plenty, Space for Nature, and Fungi Fest NZ, with prizes supported by New Zealand Geographic.

Participants will be invited to search for fungi, photograph their finds, and upload observations using the iNaturalist app, contributing to a growing record of local species.

The event is designed to get people engaging directly with the natural environment, while also supporting citizen science and biodiversity awareness.

How it works

  • Explore local areas across the Bay of Plenty during April

  • Photograph fungi you find

  • Upload observations to iNaturalist

  • Take part in the competition and go in the draw for prizes

More details are expected to be released on 1 April.
