Hands-on learning in a horticulture setting, representing alternative pathways into New Zealand’s primary industries.

For young people who do not feel at home in a traditional classroom, Hei Whanake offers a different pathway.

Hei Whanake is a fully funded 20-week programme for 16 to 24 year olds, focused on building workplace-ready skills alongside practical horticulture and primary industry experience. The course leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Level 2), with an optional strand in self-management and employability.

Students gain hands-on experience in orchards and packhouses, receive pastoral care support throughout the programme, and are provided with transport and lunch. The aim is to prepare rangatahi for employment in Aotearoa’s primary industries, particularly horticulture and viticulture.

The programme is currently offered in Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough and Nelson/Tasman.

If you work with students who may benefit from a practical, supported pathway into industry, this could be worth sharing with whānau.
