The Ōtanewainuku Kiwi Trust is inviting the community to take part in GRŌKS – the Great Ōtanewainuku Kiwi Survey – a unique opportunity to contribute to real conservation science.

Over three consecutive nights, volunteers head out to Kiwi Listening Points across the forest to listen for and record kiwi calls. This data helps build a clearer picture of kiwi populations, including those without transmitters, and supports long-term conservation efforts in the area.

Last officially surveyed in 2001, this work is a rare chance to be part of a large-scale effort to better understand kiwi presence and distribution. It’s also an opportunity to experience the ngahere at night and connect with others contributing to local conservation.

Key details

  • Dates: 5–7 June (attend one or more nights)

  • Activity: Night-time kiwi listening survey

  • Location: Ōtanewainuku Forest, Bay of Plenty

Sign up using the registration form to take part in the survey.
