Mauao Trust is welcoming volunteers to support the care of Mauao over the summer period. This programme is now in its second year, following a successful first season that saw more than 50 volunteers involved.
The initiative provides an opportunity for members of the public to give back to Mauao, while also adding an extra layer of care and presence on the maunga during the busy summer months.
Volunteer kaitiaki support a range of activities, including:
Informing and engaging with the public
Welcoming visitors and providing directions
Sharing kōrero about Mauao
Monitoring and responding to inappropriate behaviour
Assisting Josh, the Mauao Ranger
Recording daily observations that contribute to the development of a maramataka for Mauao
There may also be opportunities to support other activities alongside the Trust’s employed kaitiaki.
The Trust is seeking volunteers who are calm, respectful, and able to manage challenging situations appropriately while upholding the mana of the maunga. For this reason, character references may be requested.
The minimum age for volunteers is 16, and the Trust encourages participation across a wide age range, mai i te rangatahi ki te pakeke. While there is a minimum age for the kaitiaki role itself, whānau are welcome to bring tamariki with them.
All full-day kaitiaki will receive a tee-shirt, and spot prizes may be awarded to those who go above and beyond in their mahi.
