Applications are now open for the 2026 Innovative Young Minds (IYM) programmes.

Innovative Young Minds (IYM) is a not-for-profit initiative and STEM programme for Year 11 and 12 girls in New Zealand to explore pathways in STEMM — science, technology, engineering, mathematics and high-tech manufacturing.

The programme began in 2017 as a collaboration between Rotary Hutt City and Hutt City Council. Rotary had long supported youth and local schools, and the Council was keen to grow innovation and talent in the region. What started as a local initiative has steadily grown into something much wider.

As interest increased, the IYM Charitable Trust was established in 2019 to oversee the programme. A small team now manages the day-to-day mahi, coordinates speakers and experiences, and works with sponsors to keep the programme accessible for students from a range of backgrounds.

Today, IYM offers three options for Year 11 and 12 kōtiro:

IYM Online

7–10 April 2026 (April school holidays)

Delivered via Zoom and Google Classroom, this four half-day programme connects up to 100 students from across Aotearoa. Participants hear from wāhine working in STEMM fields, explore different career pathways, and build connections with like-minded rangatahi.

IYM Anytime

Launched more recently, IYM Anytime is an on-demand option bringing together recorded presentations, interviews and sessions from previous programmes. It allows ākonga to explore STEMM interests at their own pace, wherever they are.

Over the years, IYM has grown from a regional camp into a national opportunity. Its kaupapa remains consistent; creating spaces where young women can see themselves in STEMM, connect with mentors, and imagine futures that may not have previously felt visible.
