Bay Conservation Alliance has just launched their new Tauira Mahi training platform, and it’s a massive resource for our region. If you have students who are considering environmental career pathways after high school, or if you want to upskill your own field knowledge, their new platform makes it easy to jump in.

The Essentials

The program has moved from a long-term cadetship to flexible units that are designed by conservation professionals to teach the actual skills currently needed on the ground.

  • 12 Field Units: 1–2 day practical sessions running across the Bay of Plenty (Kaharoa, Ōtanewainuku, Ōhiwa, etc.).

  • Topics: Foundations in Conservation, Freshwater Ecology, Bird ID, and Pest Animal Control.

  • Cost: Very affordable—most 1-day units are around $27, and 2-day units are $54.

  • Online Learning: In-depth modules like Native Plant Identification launch on July 1st, 2026

Pro Tip for Kaiako: There are also free quizzes on the platform (like "What’s that weed?") that you could use in class right now.
