Year 11 Agriculture and Horticultural Science Confirmed as a Standalone Subject

Following strong advocacy from rural school principals, kaiako, and primary sector groups across the motu, Education Minister Erica Stanford has confirmed that Year 11 Agriculture and Horticultural Science will be reinstated as a standalone optional subject alongside compulsory Year 11 Science. Announced on Monday 2 November 2026, the decision reverses an earlier proposal that would have required kura to teach agricultural and horticultural concepts solely as an applied lens within the general Year 11 Science curriculum.

What Happens Next: Development & Public Consultation of Year 11 Agriculture and Horticultural Science

The Ministry of Education will now partner with subject matter experts to draft the new Year 11 Agriculture and Horticultural Science curriculum content, alongside teaching resources, assessment materials, and implementation support for kaiako.
