In this cluster, HoDs and teachers of NCEA Level 1 Science examined slides and external moderator comments compiled by Linda Haycock (NZASE). Science educators who missed this session who are accessing the resource folder should:

  • Take careful note of the changes to Explanatory Note 1.

  • Be mindful that external moderator comments are for the 2024 version of the standards.

Lian also produced and shared an A3 resource showing a side-by-side comparison of the Expected Student Responses for CB1.2 (Chemical Reactions in Context) which were recently developed and published by the Ministry of Education. The yellow highlights are intended to show the "extra that is needed" when moving from achieved-to-merit or merit-to-excellence.

Jim (ESSENZ) also shared the initial details of a major upcoming science event for the region happening in September. We look forward to updating you as soon as we hear more details.

Additional support was also present as Vicki (BEANZ) fielded biology-related questions and shared her experiences from the Science Teaching Leadership Programme.

During discussions around moderator commentary and student work, Maree suggested that, among other measures, student assessment cover sheets could also include a section for consenting the use of submitted work professional learning and development.

Bay Science is also delighted to take the initiative of laying the foundations towards establishing an HoD network to share moderation and expertise, as well as engaging with our science educator members as a participant in the NCEA Review and Maintenance Programme (RAMP).
